Wanees Zarour

Wanees Zarour is an award winning composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist whose work seamlessly blends Middle Eastern music and jazz with global influences. Known for his virtuosic buzuq performance and boundary-pushing compositions, Zarour has collaborated with renowned artists worldwide, performed on prestigious stages, and led groundbreaking ensembles that redefine cross-cultural music.

A dynamic bandleader and visionary composer, Zarour’s music transcends borders, drawing from jazz, Arabic maqam, Brazilian rhythms, and Western classical traditions. His 2014 debut album, Quarter to Midnight, showcased his innovative approach to fusion, leading to a U.S. tour with the Wanees Zarour Ensemble. In 2018, he launched East Loop, a jazz septet that explores the intersection of Arabic music and jazz, with an upcoming album set for release in 2025.

Beyond his own projects, Zarour is a key figure in Chicago’s world music scene. As co-director of the Chicago Immigrant Orchestra, he curates a 14-piece rotating ensemble of master musicians from diverse traditions, creating a unique platform for immigrant artists to share their heritage in an evolving, contemporary framework. Since 2010, he has also led the Middle East Music Ensemble at the University of Chicago, transforming it into a 70-piece powerhouse that serves as a national hub for Middle Eastern and North African music.

Zarour’s compositions have been commissioned for orchestras worldwide and featured in film and theater. He also serves as a faculty member at the University of Chicago, the Arabic Music Retreat, and GLOMUS, frequently giving masterclasses at universities across the U.S.

Zarour has received the Chicago Esteemed Artist award in 2021 and is a 2024 3Arts Awardee. With a career dedicated to bridging musical traditions, Wanees Zarour is at the forefront of a new wave of global music, pushing the boundaries of tradition while creating a fresh, contemporary sound.
